St. Petersburg, Florida recently ranked #8 in the country for entrepreneurship according to Swyft Filings, which noted in its overview that "[A] sprawling metropolis isn’t a prerequisite for new business success. In fact, less populous cities offer their own unique advantages, such as lower costs and a tightly-knit community, which can be vital for businesses in their early stages."
These advantages led to the Sunshine City's recognition as one of the "top cities whose residents are the most likely to have brought their business ideas to life, and where the business environment is best positioned to foster long-term success." Swyft Filings evaluated the 300 most populous cities in the U.S. on key factors such as the rate of new business formations and business climate favorability, including:
- New business applications
- Historic business survival data
- Economic health and workforce productivity
- Cost of doing business
- New business support via SBA loans
