  1. PETERSBURG, Fla.-(June 27, 2018) - The St. Petersburg Area Economic Development Corporation (EDC) partnered with Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and the USF-St. Petersburg Kate Tiedemann College of Business (KTCOB) to host, ‘Big Data Analytics.’ The event, held at KTCOB’s Lynn Pippenger Hall, featured Johns Hopkins All Children’s’ Hospital’s data science team who presented their innovative healthcare informatics model that is transforming medical practices around the world and can be applied similarly to other industries.

“Artificial Intelligence models developed in St. Petersburg by Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, will help children all over the world,” said Mohamed Rehman, M.D., chair of the Department of Anesthesia at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and professor of anesthesiology and critical care and pediatrics (pending academic review) with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “We act locally but think globally.”

Dr. Rehman was joined by Luis Ahumada, Director of Predictive Analytics at Johns Hopkins All Children’s who shed insight on how the leading pediatric hospital uses big data and predictive analytics to provide children the highest quality of care possible at the lowest cost. By predicting risk and analyzing even the most cutting-edge processes, Johns Hopkins All Children’s data science team improves physicians’ decision making and implements the most appropriate care processes.

"What St. Petersburg develops, the world uses," Dr. Rehman said.

“Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital is a staple not only of our innovation district, but of our region at large,” J.P. DuBuque, President, St. Petersburg EDC said. “The work they are doing has as great of an impact on the healthcare industry as it does to those in financial services and manufacturing, alike.”

In addition to USFSP students, SRI-International, St. Petersburg College, and VHB were among the nearly forty local business leaders in attendance at the event.

‘Big Data Analytics’ marks the third data analytics- exclusive event hosted by the EDC-USFSP partnership over the preceding three months and is part of an effort to strengthen the already thriving data analytics industry in St. Petersburg, which has been identified by the City’s Grow Smarter Strategy as a target sector primed for the most growth.

“Our partnership with the St. Pete EDC has led to the implementation of two new programs within our Data Analytics track that will ensure the local talent pool is best prepared to meet the needs of local growing companies,” Dr. Sri Sundaram, Dean, USFSP said. “The information Johns Hopkins All Children’s team provided is invaluable to our students and the local business community.”

The St. Petersburg EDC looks forward to providing support to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital to ensure their growth and success in the City. USFSP and the St. Petersburg EDC are planning the next Data Analytics-exclusive event for the fall of 2018.
